What Is The Exercise Fitball?

The Core Stability Ball is a piece of exercise equipment - a ball made of soft PVC which is normally 35 to 85 centimeters (14 to 34 inches) in diameter. With a great reputation in physical therapy and exercise, this little fella goes by many names: .

stability ball, core stability ball, exercise ball, pilates exercise ball, swiss ball, gym ball, core exercise ball, fitball, body ball, exercise equipment ball, workouts ball, swiss exercise ball...

NOT to be confused with the tougher and heavier medicine ball - this is bigger and much lighter.

Where Does The Exercise Equipment Ball Come From?

Developed in 1963 by Aquilino Cosani, an Italian plastics manufacturer, the ball was originally called The Pezzi Ball. Cosani mastered the process for moulding large puncture-resistant plastic balls. The ball proved popular in physiotherapy treatment programmes for children and babies.

The use of ball exercise as physical therapy for adult treatment developed in Switzerland, hence the new name of "Swiss Ball" . The ball was introduced to treat orthopedic or medical problems, and proved so popular that news spread to the USA.  Today the core stability ball still shows up in physical therapy, athletics training, general fitness and even yoga.

Why Should I Buy A Stability Ball?

The major difference comes when you compare working out on a hard flat surface such as a bench, to exercising in tandem with the instability of the ball to remain balanced, engaging many more core muscles to do so - the abdominal  and back muscles — which are the focus of exercise ball fitness programs.

Think of the typical flabby belly - now think of the abdominal region as a ball [ironically!].  To really tighten that area up you need to hit it from the front, the back, and the sides.  Here's where the exercise equipment ball shines!

What Else Can I Use A Swiss Ball For?

Based on the theory that the abdominal and back muscles are constantly engaged and active in order to maintain proper posture and balance on the ball., it makes a great chair to sit on at home or at work.  This is often suggested by physical therapists for back patients in sedentary jobs.

This large plastic ball, known as a "birth ball", can also be used during labour to aid the descent of the fetal head into the pelvis. Sitting in an upright position will also aid fetal positioning and is more comfortable for the woman. Sitting on the ball with arms placed on a bed, table or otherwise sturdy object for support and gently rocking the hips may help the woman during contractions and aid the natural physiological processes

So if you really want to firm up your adominals and have a blast working out on the most unique and fun piece of exercise equipment you'll ever own, you're in the right place.
